The Interdisciplinary Research Center for Performing Arts has been an MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) approved joint usage/research center since 2013.
MEXT established this certification in 2008 to strengthen the foundation of academic research and promote it across a wide range of disciplines by creating a system through which researchers from all over Japan can share facilities and materials to conduct their research. To date, 90 joint usage/research centers have been approved at 41 universities (29 public, 12 private).
The Interdisciplinary Research Center for Performing Arts hosts themed research projects led by researchers of Kyoto University of Art and Design (KUAD) as well as research projects on a variety of subjects proposed by researchers from other institutions in response to open calls for proposals (started from the academic year of 2014). Through these projects focused on so-called "theatre experiments" performed at the Kyoto Art Theatre, we aim to strengthen the foundation of academic research and take it to new places.
